How to Make a Hemp Bracelet at Home
Hemp is a strong and durable fiber cultivated from the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp bracelets are traditionally made using a simple macrame technique where four strands are knotted together. Store-bought hemp bracelets can be costly, but you can create your own hemp bracelet at home for a fraction of the price. All the materials required to create hemp bracelets can be purchased from craft stores or online retailers.

- Tape measure
- Hemp cord, 90 inches
- Hemp cord, 30 inches
- Scissors
- Cushion
- Safety pin
- Pony bead

Fold each of the hemp strands in half. Align the folded middles of both strands. Tie a single knot below the top of the strands to create a small loop that is just large enough to fit a pony bead through.

Open the safety pin and insert the sharp point through the middle of the loop. Attach the strands to the cushion. Set the cushion onto your lap. This will temporarily hold the hemp strands in place and make them easier to braid.

Position and separate the four strands so that the two shorter strands are in the middle and the longer strands are on the outside. The two middle strands are called the "base" strands, while the two outer strands are called the "knotting" strands.

Lift the knotting strand on the left-hand side and place it over the two base strands, and then pull it underneath the right-hand knotting strand. Pick-up the knotting strand on the right-hand side and place it underneath the two base strands, then over the left knotting strand. Pull both ends of the knotting strands firmly to create a tight knot. Repeat the knotting technique until you have knotted the desired length of bracelet.

Gather the four strands together. Thread the pony bead onto the four strands and push it up to the bottom of the knotted part of the bracelet. Tie a double knot underneath the pony bead to securely hold it in place. Trim off any excess hemp cord with the scissors. Remove the safety pin from the top of the hemp bracelet.

Tips & Warnings
The same technique can be used to create friendship bracelets out of embroidery floss, yarn and cotton thread.
Scissors should only be used under the supervision of an adult.
Be careful when opening and closing the safety pin.
