How to Stain Plywood Edging
Plywood is a type of composite veneer wood comprised of several compacted layers. Plywood can be bought in several grades. There is "CDX" grade plywood which is normally used in construction of a wood frame home. It is a less expensive grade and has many visible flaws, but is covered by finishing materials. Plywood is also sold in pressure-treated grades which are more weather resistant. Plywood edging simply refers to the finishing edge placed on a counter top or cabinet to hide the edges of the wood. This can be stained to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Abrade and smooth the plywood edging with 220-grit sandpaper. Sand in the same direction as the wood grain as much as possible, removing any splinters.
-
2
Wipe down the plywood edging with a tack cloth to remove all the dust from sanding.
-
-
3
Apply a light, even coat of wood conditioner using a sponge brush, again going in the same direction as the wood grain. Let the conditioner soak in and dry for about 12 hours or as long as the manufacturer suggests.
-
4
Brush on a coat of wood sealer once the conditioner has fully dried using a clean sponge brush. This will prevent the stain from unevenly penetrating the plywood edging, which causes blotting to occur.
-
5
Gently sand over the plywood edging with 220-grit sandpaper to slightly rough it.
-
6
Brush your choice of stain on the plywood edging with a nylon brush, going in the same direction as the wood grain. Allow the stain to fully dry, then apply additional coats as needed to make it darker. Wipe down the plywood edging between each stain application with a cloth to remove excess stain.
