Use strands of hemp to make a spiral neckalce.

Lend color and decorative flair to a hemp necklace by adding a hanging bead. Hanging beads come in hundreds of styles, designs and materials. Select a bead made out of a material that can withstand how often and where the recipient wears the necklace. For example, if the person intends to wear it all the time and leads an active life, a hollow glass bead may break. A wooden or plastic bead would work best in that situation.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out two 30-inch pieces of hemp.

    • 2

Hold the two pieces of hemp in one hand so the ends match. Drape one end over a marker. Tie the two pieces of hemp into a double-knot that sits underneath the marker. Pull the marker from the string, leaving a loop over the knot.

    • 3

Place the hemp on a flat surface. Set a heavy book on top of the loop. Separate the two strings to sit parallel to each other.

    • 4

Lift the string on the left. Make a "4" shape by making a backwards "L" with the first string. Tuck the tail end of the first string through the open part of the "4." Pull the two ends of the string tight. Repeat the step to make the rest of the knot.

    • 5

Continue making knots until the necklace is half-complete. The hemp will twist as you make the knots. The first string will end up shorter than the second string.

    • 6

Put the bead on the longer of the two strings. Push the bead to the knots.

    • 7

Make more knots until only 1 1/2 inches of the short string remains.

    • 8

Tie a double knot with the remaining string. Trim the extra string down to 1/4 inch.
