Directions to Make a Sock Monster Using Toe Socks
Stuffed socks with faces and personality are oddly endearing and inexpensive to make. Though most sock monsters are made with regular tube socks, toe socks will give your sock monsters an extra edge. Whether you want to start up a line of sock buddies or merely give them out as gifts, get to know a few sock monster basics before you branch out on your own.

1
Lay one sock on a flat surface with the heel side up. Set the second sock aside.
-
2
Cut up the center from the opening of the sock to form the legs of the sock monster. You can make the legs as long or as short as you please by cutting a longer or shorter slit.
-
-
3
Cut a triangular shape out of each side of the sock just below the heel. Leave at least two inches of sock between the two triangles. This area will serve as the monster's neck, and if you cut too far in, the neck will not be large enough to hold up the head.
-
4
Pick up the second sock. Cut down from the toe side of the sock. Begin two toes in from the pinkie toe side so that the pinkie toe and the toe next to it are included. Make the slit as long or as short as you would like the first arm to be.
-
5
Make a slit two toes in from the other side of the sock so that the big toe and the toe next to it are included. Make the slit as long or as short as you would like the second arm to be.
-
6
Remove each arm from the sock by cutting at a 45 degree angle from the slit to the edge of the sock.
-
7
Turn your monster inside-out. Sew shut the triangular cuts you made on each side of the neck.
-
8
Decide where you would like the monster's eyes to be placed. You can position them on two of the toes or you can put them below the toes, above the heel.
-
9
Hold the buttons in place on the outside of the sock while you sew them on, bringing the needle from the inside of the sock out through the holes in the buttons. Sew them on securely. Tie the thread off on the inside of the sock.
-
10
Turn the monster right side-in. Position the extra fabric in the heel area to form an "O" shape. This will serve as the mouth of the monster so the shape does not need to be perfect. Pin around the mouth-shape to keep it in place.
-
11
Stuff the head with as much stuffing as you need to achieve the desired look. Sew around the shape you formed in the heel so that the shape sticks out from the rest of the sock. Since you are sewing on the outside of the monster, stitch in the crease of the mouth so the stitching is not visible.
-
12
Turn the arms inside-out. Sew each arm up the side from the toe to the diagonal cut which you will leave open. Turn each arm right side-in and stuff it with fiberfill.
-
13
Fill up the monster's neck and torso with stuffing.
-
14
Pin the diagonal opening of each arm to each side of the body below the neck. The steeper part of the diagonal will be at the top so that the arms point down rather than stick up on your monster's body. Sew on each arm around the opening.
-
15
Turn one leg inside out and line the sides up to each other. Sew the leg beginning at the bottom where the original opening of the sock was located. Sew up the side, stopping about an inch before you reach the top. Turn the leg right side-in carefully through the small opening. Stuff the leg and finish sewing it up. Repeat this process for the second leg.
-
16
Finish your sock monster by stitching shut the space between the two legs.
