How to Make a Hippie Scarf Headband
Recreating the easy-going style of hippies or bohemians should not, by definition, require a lot of planning and effort. Whenever you add a hippie-inspired element to your ensemble, you should make it appear effortless, as if it was a compulsory afterthought rather than carefully plotted accessory. Choose an aesthetic to emulate with the material and embellishments you select. Use chiffon and lace for an ethereal headband, silk and sequins for a luxe wrap or organic fibers for a natural scarf.
Things You'll Need
- Fabric, enough for a 36 inches of headband
- Scissors
- Needle
- Thread
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Fabric glue
- Clips (refrigerator magnet clips, chip bag clips)
- No-fray adhesive
- Embellishments (chain, beads, ribbons, lace, etc.)
Instructions

1
Gather fabric for the headband. Use an oblong scarf, old clothing or purchase new material. You need enough material to make a 4-by-36-inch scarf, when laid flat.
-
2
Cut the fabric into pieces that collectively measure 36 inches, or longer. Each piece of fabric should be between 4 and 12 inches wide. Aim for 6 to 8 inches wide. You may have one piece of fabric that size, or you may need two to four pieces.
-
-
3
Lay the pieces in a row, side-by-side. Overlap the first two pieces by 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
-
4
Stitch the pieces together by hand or with a sewing machine. Leave the overlapped area as a small hem to stabilize the seam. Alternatively, you can glue the fabric together, if you do not want to sew. Apply a thin line of fabric glue in the same position you would stitch a seam. Press the two pieces together. Place clips on top of the glued line to help bind the fibers.
-
5
Repeat the process to attach other segments of fabric.
-
6
Add embellishments to the scarf. For example, you can add a ribbon or a band of lace running across the fabric or applied to the edges. You can add sequins or beads across the fabric, stitched into place. If you use fabric-based embellishments, you should be able to affix them with stitching or glue. If you use hard embellishments, like beads, you should stitch them on by hand.
-
7
Tie each end of the scarf in a small knot, or apply no-fray adhesive to a raw seam to keep the fabric from fraying. You can also apply ribbon to a raw edge, to impede fraying.
-
8
Gather the fabric in a haphazard manner. Hippie accessories never look too arranged or precise. Hold the material with both hands, positioned off-center.
-
9
Hold the fabric to the middle of your forehead, with one hand pulling the fabric taut on each side of your head.
-
10
Bring the fabric around to meet in the back or on the side of your head. Tie the scarf in a knot to secure it.
-
11
Adjust the folds and embellishments on the scarf, as needed.
