Save money by making your own windshield washer fluid.

It's important to keep your car stocked with plenty of windshield wiper fluid, especially during the winter months. Like most things, however, the cost of wiper fluid has steadily increased over time. In order to avoid paying the cost of a gallon of windshield wiper fluid each time you run low, create your own mixture at home using a few basic ingredients. Please keep in mind, however, that homemade washer fluid may not be as resistant to freezing as commercial fluid. If you live in a cold area, use homemade fluid with caution.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty a one-gallon jug; rinse it out.

    • 2

Add three cups of window cleaner to the jug.

    • 3

Add one cup of isopropyl alcohol to the jug. Fill the jug with water. Mix the solution thoroughly.

    • 4

Open the hood of your vehicle. Add the mixture to the washer fluid tank. Activate your windshield washer jets and use your wipers to test it out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add more isopropyl alcohol to your mixture to protect against colder temperatures. The more alcohol you add, the more freeze-resistant the mixture will be.
