How to Make a Doll Bowler Hat

How to Make a Doll Bowler Hat thumbnail
The bowler hat has a relatively simple design, making it an approachable craft.

Bowler hat is the British term for the derby hat: a rounded crown type of headgear which became popular between the mid-19th and early 20th century. Nowadays, the hat is worn only by certain professionals, such as equestrians or as a fashion accessory. Making a miniature bowler hat for your doll is a delicate task but not very difficult, especially when using commercially sold, crackable plastic eggs. Depending on your doll's head size, choose either ordinary sized plastic eggs or mini ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Crack the plastic egg and keep its bottom, or more rounded, side. Measure the diameter of its opening with a ruler. Open a compass' legs in half the diameter's length to form the circle's radius.

    • 2

Draw a circle on thin cardboard with the compass. Open the compass slightly -- about 1/3 of the rounded part's height -- and create a second concentric circle. Use a utility knife to cut out the shape and complete the brim.

    • 3

Attach the brim onto the half-egg using paper tape. Do not use ordinary sticky tape, as it's slippery surface is not appropriate for this craft.

    • 4

Cover the whole hat with black felt. Cut two identical rings for the upper and lower side of the brim. For the round part of the hat, form strips of felt becoming pointed on top.

    • 5

Add a ribbon to the hat. Since this is a small craft and it's difficult to cut a tiny strip of ribbon and glue it, use black construction paper instead. The "ribbon" goes to the bottom of the rounded part.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not allow kids to use the utility knife at any time.
