How to Make Buttons Double for Cuff Sleeves

You can use buttons to double for cuff links.

A long sleeve, buttoned-down dress shirt can have a traditional cuff or a French cuff. A traditional cuff has a straight sleeve all the way to the hem. The cuff overlaps at the wrist where one button holds it in place. A French cuff has a folded cuff just above the wrist, and the cuff meets but does not overlap, with a cuff link holding the two cuff ends together. Cuff links vary in material, style and price. The most basic cuff link consists of two linked buttons.

Things You'll Need

• 2 buttons, with loops on their undersides
• 2 jump rings
• Needle-nosed pliers

Instructions

1. Open a jump ring with needle-nosed pliers.

2. Slip the jump ring onto the loop that is on the backside of a button.

3. Close the jump ring with the pliers.

4. Repeat the process, to put a jump ring on the other button. Do not close it yet.

5. Slip the open jump ring onto the ring already hanging from the first button.

6. Close the jump ring with the pliers.
