Whether you're prepping for a Halloween celebration or for a role in a stage play, you can put together a glam costume on your own. Fortunately, doing so won't require you to spend a lot of money. Search your own closet, a friend's closet, and local second hand shops for all the components of a dazzling glam costume that's fit for a star.

Visit a vintage, second hand, or thrift store in your area and search for the focal piece of your glam costume. Whether male or female, it's important to look for something that's recognizably glamorous such as a flapper dress, a feather boa, extreme platform shoes, a sparkly wig or leather pants. The rest of your costume will revolve around this piece.

Pair the main garment of your costume with other clothing items and accessories from your own closet or a friend's to make a convincing look. For instance, if you found a cheetah print jump suit, you can wear black boots and a blond wig for a rockstar look. Or, if you found a bright red ball gown, pair it with gold costume jewelry for a red carpet look. If you need ideas, flip through a few magazines or watch old Hollywood films for inspiration.

Remember to finish the look by covering all the details. Lipstick, nail polish, a push-up bra, sunglasses, or a string of pearls can take your costume to the next level. Make sure that your hair and makeup are also in sync with the look you're going for. For instance, if you have long dark hair and want to dress up as Marilyn Monroe, a blond wig will make your costume more convincing.
