How to Show a Chat Box on Yahoo
Show a chat box in Yahoo! Messenger to begin chatting with one of your buddies. Although the Yahoo! Messenger buddy list lets you know who's online and able to chat, you can't actually talk to someone unless you have a chat box open. If he doesn't open a box to chat with you, open a box to begin chatting with him.

Sign in to your Yahoo! Messenger account. Wait for your buddy list to load on the screen, and to display online friends.

Scroll through the buddy list. Double-click the name of any friend with whom you want to chat to open a chat box.

Begin typing messages to your friend. Exit out of the chat box whenever you want to end the chat with him.

Tips & Warnings
When you open a new chat box with a friend with whom you've recently chatted, messages from your last chat appear in the chat box, unless you've specifically deleted them.
