How to Format an Unreadable Mac Drive

Hard drive crashes may leave your storage drive unreadable or malfunctioning. You can use the disk utility on your Mac to format the drive and return it to a functioning operating condition. The disk utility is a native part of your Mac OS X operating system that enables you to fix errors on the various hard drives associated with your computer.

      Connect the USB cable from the drive to your computer if it is an external drive.

      Click "Finder" and select "Applications." Click the "Utilities" folder and select "Disk Utility." Click the unreadable drive icon in the sidebar on the left side of the Disk Utility interface.

      Click the "Erase" tab and select the "Volume Format" menu. Click the "Mac OS Extended" option, then click the "Erase" button to format the drive to a functional operating condition.
