Start your crocheted dishcloth with a row of chain stitches.

If you have basic crochet skills, there's no need to spend money on store-bought washcloths. Worsted-weight dishcloth cotton is available inexpensively in most craft stores. It comes in a wide range of colors, allowing you to make washcloths to match your bathroom. Handmade crochet washcloths make quick, thoughtful gifts for wedding and baby showers, and nobody -- especially new parents -- can ever have too many. Work up a crocheted washcloth next time you need a simple project to make while watching a movie.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 35 stitches. If you've never worked with cotton before, chain somewhat loosely; cotton doesn't have the same give as wool and is slightly stiff to work with.

    • 2

Skip 1 stitch, which counts as your turning chain and your first single crochet.

    • 3

Work 1 single crochet stitch into the next 34 stitches of the base chain. Chain 1 stitch and turn.

    • 4

Work 1 single crochet stitch into each single crochet stitch of the previous row. Repeat this step for every successive row, chaining 1 stitch before turning your work at the end of each row.

    • 5

Stop crocheting when the washcloth is 6 inches long. Break the yarn at the end of the row, pull the tail through the last loop on your hook and weave the tail along the edge of the washcloth.
