A homemade birthday card tells your best friend you care.

Instead of buying a traditional greeting card for your best friend's birthday this year, try making your own handmade birthday card. Not only can you save money, you can recycle at the same time. Turn any used holiday card into a personalized birthday greeting. Basic decoupage skills, some interesting decorative paper and a laser-printed photo transform a Christmas card from the insurance company into a handcrafted heirloom your friend will cherish. The card may be remembered long after the gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of decorative paper large enough to cover the front of the card.

    • 2

Pour 4 tablespoons of white glue into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir them together to create your decoupage medium.

    • 3

Paint the glue mixture onto the front cover of the card with a sponge brush. Lay the decorative paper down. Paint another layer of glue over the paper.

    • 4

Lay a laser-printed photo of yourself and your friend onto the front cover of the card and paint another layer of glue over it. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 5

Write "Happy Birthday" or another message on the outside of the card with glitter paint. Squeeze paint in accordion tubes allows precise control over the lines.

    • 6

Cut another piece of decorative paper big enough to cover the inside of the card. Paste it over the message and any writing that was on the card before. Glue the paper in with a glue stick and write a birthday message to your friend.
