How to Create Doorways in Second Life

Linden Lab's "Second Life" allows you to create an avatar, who then goes on to build and texture objects or clothing layers. All "Second Life" avatars come with a premade library of clothes and textures, courtesy of Linden Lab. When building furniture, you also utilize textures and scripts from other designers in "Second Life," that you find on the Marketplace website or in-world at any builder's shop.

Instructions

  1. Making the Door

    • 1

Click the "Build" button at the bottom once logged into Second Life. Your mouse pointer changes to a wand. Left-click on the ground in world to create a square wooden object.

    • 2

Right-click the object to load the Build menu. Click "Stretch." Blue, green and red dots form around the box. Drag the blue dot down to flatten the square, then drag the green button to stretch the prim out to form a rectangle.

    • 3

Click "Rotate." Click on the red axis and drag to flip the rectangle vertical and perpendicular to the ground.

    • 4

Press "CTRL" and "i" to open your inventory. Type "door" into the search box. Second Life's default inventory includes five door textures. Double-click on a door texture to preview.

    • 5

Click on the "Build" menu dialog and click the "Texture" tab. By default, Second Life adds a light wooden texture to objects with a white color. Change the color according to the door prim that you choose. For instance, if you choose the texture "Door51" by Marlin Studios, click on the color box and select a dark brown color.

    • 6

Click on the "Select Faces to Textures" button at the top of the Build menu. A white target symbol appears on each surface plane of your rectangle door. Left-click on the surface you want to add the door texture, such as the front.

    • 7

Click and drag the door texture from your inventory into the "Texture" box in the Build menu. The door texture appears on the front of the door. Add the texture to the back of the door as well.

    Adding the Open Door Script

    • 8

Open your browser and navigate to Second Life's Marketplace website.

    • 9

Click in the search box on the main page and search free door script or door script. Many door scripts exist on Second Life for free. Find one that you like on the Marketplace, click on "Buy Now" to purchase. The script sends to your avatar in-world. Click "Accept" to place in your inventory.

    • 10

Open your inventory by pressing "CTRL" and "i." Click in the "Objects" tab and drag the box of door scripts to the ground. Right-click and open, then click "Copy to Inventory." The scripts now go into a folder in your inventory.

    • 11

Right-click your rectangle door prim to load the Build menu again. Click on the "Content" tab.

    • 12

Click and drag the door script from your inventory underneath "Content." The script automatically adds. Click "X." Try out each door script to find one that you like best. Click on the door each time to show the animation of the door opening and closing.

    Building the Doorway

    • 13

Build another rectangular object. Stretch this prim as far as you need the doorway and walls to be. The door you created goes in the center of this prim, so you want the rectangle to be tall and wall when you stretch each dot.

    • 14

Open your inventory and type "Wall" or "Wallpaper" in the search field. Add the texture to the wall just like you added the texture to the door. Right-click the door and click "Position." Arrows pop up around your door. Press "Shift" and drag an arrow to create a copy of the door object. Right-click the copy and click on the "Texture" tab. Set the color to white.

    • 15

Search for "Default Transparent Texture" in your inventory. Click and drag this texture into the "Texture" box for the door copy. The door becomes invisible. Turn on "Highlight" mode by pressing "CTRL" and "ALT" and "T" at once. You now see your invisible door highlighted in red. Right-click to select and bring up the Build menu. Click "Position." Drag the invisible prim door to the center of the wall that you created.

    • 16

Right-click the visible door and click "Position." Click and drag the visible door into the space of the invisible door. Your wall now has a door in the center. Adjust the size and fit according to your needs.

    • 17

Right-click the wall and press "SHIFT." Left-click while holding "SHIFT" and select the visible and invisible doors. Press "CTRL" and "L" to link the objects together. Press "CTRL" and "ALT" and "T" to turn off "Highlight" mode. You now have a basic doorway.
