How to Make a Rectangular Tablecloth With a Ruffle
If you have a table with lots of dents and dings, you don't have to get rid of it or resurface it. Instead, you can do a quick fix: simply throw a tablecloth over it. When you purchase a tablecloth from a department store, the item you are getting is far from unique. To express your originality, make your own rectangular tablecloth.

1
Use a tape measure to get the exact length and width of the table you wish to place the cloth on. Write down your measurements.
-
2
Measure the distance from the table's edge to where you want the end of the cloth to fall. Multiply this measurement times two. Add this measurement to the original length and width measurements in Step 1. For example, if you want the cloth to fall 5 inches from the edge, add 10 (5x2) inches to the length and 10 inches to the width. Add 2 inches to the final length and width measurements for seam allowance.

3
Cut a piece of fabric to match your measurements, including the seam allowance.
-
4
Fold the ends of your fabric to create a hem (according to the hem allowance). Use straight pins to secure the hem in place.
-
5
Stitch the hem (straight-stitch) using a sewing machine or sewing needles. If you don't know how to sew, an easy alternative is to use hemming tape. With hemming tape, you place a piece of tape underneath the hem and use a hot iron to activate the tape's bond.
-
6
Remove the straight pins from the hem of the cloth.
-
7
Lay the tablecloth on a flat working surface. Pin the ruffle along the cloth's edges. The ruffle should extend around the entire cloth.
-
8
Stitch the ruffle (straight-stitch) in place using a sewing machine or a needle and thread. If you are using hemming tape, the tape must be placed underneath the ruffle, so that it is between the ruffle and the cloth.
-
9
Remove the straight pins from the ruffle. Iron the tablecloth to remove wrinkles from the fabric.
