How to Make a Scepter for a King

How to Make a Scepter for a King thumbnail
A scepter has long been an accessory of royalty.

The crowning touch to any royal costume is a homemade scepter. Children can make scepters as props for a dramatic play out of common craft supplies. A lightweight scepter is safe for even young children to use with regal dress-up clothes. Kids enjoy working at a craft table to make a scepter for king and queen costumes. This craft helps develop fine motor coordination and strength. Children also exercise imagination with impromptu scenarios of imperial situations.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a sheet of gold colored poster board at 2 1/2 inches from one side with a pencil. Make two separate marks at this measurement. Place a yardstick next to the marks as a straight edge and draw a line from the top to bottom of the poster board.

    • 2

Roll the poster board into a tube that is parallel to the pencil line with the gold side out. Start the roll on the side with the pencil mark and roll it as tightly as possible. Put rubber bands around both ends of the tube to maintain the tight roll and leave it overnight to form a tubular shape.

    • 3

Unroll the poster board and cut along the pencil line with scissors to get a 2 1/2-inch strip off the end. Roll a small tube with the strip by bringing the cut edge against the opposite edge and fastening with tape.

    • 4

Draw or trace two identical scepter top designs on the back side of the gold poster board. Draw small pedestals under the tops with a 1- by 1 1/2-inch rectangle at the bottom to serve as a gluing tab. Print a tracing template if you prefer that to drawing your own design.

    • 5

Cut out the homemade scepter tops with scissors. Decorate the gold sides by gluing on plastic gemstones and glitter.

    • 6

Roll the rectangular glue tabs toward the backs and put glue on the front sides. Insert the tabs into one end of the rolled tube to make a scepter. Apply more glue to the tabs and the inside of the tube. Allow at least one hour drying time before playing with the scepter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid getting glitter into children's eyes. Ask young children to spread glue on the scepter top wherever they would like to place glitter. Then sprinkle the glitter onto the scepter tops for them at a separate table.
