Apply to a school with an interior design major and enroll in the program to get an interior design degree. Choose a school that has the type of degree you are seeking such as a two-year or four-year degree. Some online colleges also offer interior design degrees. Before you enroll though, check to ensure their accreditation. The school needs to be accredited by an accreditation body to ensure you are able to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) test. Not all schools have to be accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, but the school must be accredited either nationally or locally.

Seek an apprenticeship with a certified interior designer to satisfy the required time for your interior design certification. The minimum requirements for eligibility to take the NCIDQ test after acquiring you degree is four to five years (bachelor's degree) education under a Council for International Design Accreditation (CIDA) college or university and two years full time work (apprenticeship) as an interior designer or a bachelor's degree from a non-CIDA college or university and three years apprenticeship as an interior designer. If you are acquiring a two year interior design degree the requirement for apprenticeship is four years.

    • 3

Take the NCIDQ test to become a certified interior within your state. To sit down for the NCIDQ test you must first complete your degree and complete the required length of full time work (apprenticeship) as an interior designer either with a NCIDQ interior designer, architect with design services, or a registered interior designer to ensure that your meet the test's work experience requirement as 100 percent. NCIDQ does not accept work experience as a teacher to satisfy their work requirements.

Document all your work with photographs starting in college and then any work you complete as an apprentice to start a portfolio. A portfolio will give potential clients the chance to view any work you have completed. Include any work experience as well as any software programs you use and any materials you are familiar with. Chronicle projects from start to finish to show the process from the concept sketches to the completion of the project for any work you wish to showcase.
