How to Use a Grave Accent in a Windows Document

Grave accents occur in European and Asian languages that are written in the Roman alphabet. The grave accent is used over a vowel. The letter "E" with a grave accent looks like this: È.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

    Open the Character Map. (Open the Start menu and choose Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and then Character Map.)

  2. Step 2

    Choose a font from the menu.

  3. Step 3

    Locate the vowel and the grave accent that you want to use.

  4. Step 4

    Click the character; then click Select and Copy.

  5. Step 5

    Go to your document and insert your cursor at the spot where you want the vowel and the grave accent to appear.

  6. Step 6

    Paste the character onto the document.

Tips & Warnings
  • "Grave" rhymes with "mauve".
  • Some software applications, such as Microsoft Word, might permit you to insert special characters directly from within the program. Look for an Insert menu and commands such as Insert Symbol or Insert Special Characters.
