How to Handle an Unfair Performance Review at Work
If you received a performance review that is unfair or flawed, you might want to address the matter. Most companies permit employees to issue a response to performance reviews. You must write a truthful rebuttal that explains the criticisms you believe are unfair. If a formal review of your claim is not permitted, ask to place a rebuttal letter in your permanent file to minimize the impact of a negative review.

1
Request specific guidance on what you can do to dispute the performance review or offer additional pertinent information. If you do not feel comfortable speaking to the manager who performed the review, speak to another manager or a human resources manager.
-
2
Request a copy of the performance review if you have not already received one. Read the report carefully and check it for errors. If you're criticized for having poor interpersonal skills, document the examples provided in the report.

3
Complete a self-appraisal and compile evidence of performance. Focus on specific indicators of performance, such as how fast you perform your work and how well you adhere to company policy. In a sales environment, you might focus on the percentage of inquiries you converted into sales.
-
4
Present your case orally if you are requested in front of a review panel. Without getting defensive, ask your boss to explain each criticism. For example, you can say, "My records show I managed six projects, not four. Can we go over this point?" You may also present your case in writing.
-
5
Move forward. In general, a company will ignore an occasional negative review, especially if the employee has a strong record of accomplishment. Implement any changes in behavior suggested in the performance review.
-
6
Ask if you can undergo additional training. If you feel you are not fully trained around your responsibilities, or lack pertinent training, ask whether you may sign up for additional training classes. Show your managers that you accept the chance for improvement.
