How to Make a Jamaican Friendship Bracelet
Red, green, yellow and black are four colors that are strongly associated with Jamaica and Rastafarianism, a religion that is known for being practiced in that country. The black, green and yellow of the Jamaican flag stand for adversity, hope and sunlight, respectively. The red, gold and green of the Rastafarian flag stand for the blood of martyrs, Africa's mineral wealth and Ethiopia's vegetation, respectively. A basic knotting pattern using these significant colors is all you need to make Jamaican-themed bracelets that you can tie on the wrists of your friends and yourself.
Things You'll Need
- Red, green, yellow and black embroidery floss, 25 inches each
- Masking tape
- Scissors
Instructions
-
-
1
Hold the four pieces of embroidery thread together. Knot them together 1 1/2 inches from the top.
-
2
Use masking tape to secure the ends of the threads to a tabletop. Separate the threads.
-
-
3
Pick up the first thread on the left. Bring it over and under the thread beside it, then pull it through the resulting loop tightly to secure a knot. Use the same first thread to make a second loop directly beneath the first knot. The first active thread should now be positioned as the second thread from the left.
-
4
Pick up the active thread again and tightly make two looping knots around the second thread from the right the same way you did in the previous step. The active thread should now be positioned as the second thread from the right.
-
5
Pick up the active thread once more and tightly make two looping knots around the first thread on the right. The active thread should now be positioned as the first thread on the right.
-
6
Repeat Steps 3 through 5, starting over with the new first thread on the left.
-
7
Continue this pattern of knotting each active thread around the other three threads until the bracelet reaches its desired length.
-
8
Knot the ends of the threads together. Trim the excess thread with scissors to 1 1/2 inch above the knot.
