How to Get the Three Dimensional Look With Drywall
When drywall ceilings and walls have been installed, a three-dimensional feel is created by applying texture over the drywall -- the texture stands out slightly from the wall, creating the three-dimensional effect. It also covers any areas of the drywall that have been installed in a less-than-perfect state. Though there are many types of texture that can be installed, knockdown texture is a popular choice as it does not necessarily have to be applied with special tools. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Fill a 5-gallon bucket roughly half full with pre-mixed drywall compound. Pour water into the bucket in 1/2-pint increments, and stir with a paint mixing stick until the mixture is roughly the thickness of cream (a thicker mixture will create a texture that stands out more on the wall).
-
2
Pour the mixture into a paint tray. Place a plastic loop roller on a roller handle, and apply the mixture to the ceiling and walls in one coat. Wait for 15 minutes for the coat to partially set.

3
Run the edge of a knockdown knife or trowel over the walls and ceiling, starting at one end and working towards the middle. Then run the knife/trowel from the other end of the ceiling/wall and work towards the middle. Repeat this process over the entire ceiling/wall area.

4
Wait for the texture to fully dry (usually 24 hours) before applying primer and paint with a medium nap roller.

Tips & Warnings
It is best to first use the knockdown knife/trowel in an area like a closet that won't be seen, to play around with the amount of pressure applied to the knife/trowel handle. The more pressure applied, the smaller the thickness of the texture.
