How to Make an Astronaut Outfit

How to Make an Astronaut Outfit thumbnail
You can create an inexpensive homemade astronaut costume.

Blast off into outer space without letting your feet leave the ground by wearing an astronaut outfit. If your little one is crazy about astronauts and wants to pretend that she is one, or you are looking for something to wear yourself to a costume party, consider creating your own astronaut costume. While you can purchase a prefabricated costume at a party supply store, you can save some cash by constructing the costume at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash out and remove the labels from two 1/2-gallon plastic milk containers. Place the two containers side by side, with the handles aligned and the tops facing up. Wrap the tape around the top and bottom of the containers. Run a strip of the self-adhering hook-and-loop fastener vertically along the back of each milk container. The milk containers will serve as oxygen tanks for the costume.

    • 2

Attach two strips of the self-adhering hook-and-loop fastener vertically to the back of the light gray sweatshirt. Use these to attach the milk-container oxygen tanks to the sweatshirt.

    • 3

Use blue fabric paint to write "NASA" along the front of the sweatshirt. Apply the paint directly from the tip of the tube.

    • 4

Draw a circle that is 9 inches in diameter on the front of a 3 1/2-gallon white plastic bucket. The "viewing port" for your helmet should be about 4 inches from the rim of the bucket and allow your entire face to peer out. Hammer a nail into the center of the circle. Remove the nail and insert a pair of wire-cutting scissors into the hole created by the nail. Cut around the black line and remove the circle from the bucket. Print the letters "USA" with a black marker on top of the circular opening. Roll up a white dishtowel and tape it around the inside rim of the bucket. The dishtowel will allow the helmet to rest evenly on your shoulders.

    • 5

Cut strips of aluminum foil to wrap around the tops of large gardening gloves. Wrap foil strips around the top of your rain boots above the ends of your pants.

    • 6

Put on the pair of light gray sweatpants, the pair of rain boots and the sweatshirt. Ask for assistance in hooking the milk containers to the back of the shirt. Put the bucket on top of your head and then put on the gloves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry an American flag with you to add to the look of the costume.

  • Fill a bag with rocks, label it "moon rocks" and carry it around with you.

  • Cut out a picture of an alien and place it in a frame to carry around with you as well.
