Provide the intern with on-the-job experience and education about the work.

Having a college intern work at a business should be an equal partnership where both parties benefit from the work. The business benefits by having a hard-working and educated employee for a short period of time, and the intern benefits with on-the-job training and work experience. If you are interested in hiring one or more interns for your business, there are a few things you will need to do to prepare for this.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the requirements that your business needs in regard to hiring college interns and determine requisite qualifications of the interns. There are various state and federal laws to consider, such as your business providing the intern with more education in the workplace aside from the work experience, how many interns your business may hire, pay rates (if any) and the duration of work.

    • 2

Decide how many interns you will need for the job you would like to get done and how much you will be able to pay each intern. Many college interns do not earn a normal wage, but they merely gain knowledge about the profession. For students who are still attending college full-time, you may want more than one intern working for your company part-time.

    • 3

Write a detailed job description for the internship just as you would for any other position you were trying to fill. Include the business name, type of work, duration and pay, how many interns you need and any skills or education requirements for the position.

    • 4

Contact local colleges and universities about the prospect of hiring college interns and bring the job description with you for them to review. The colleges will post the internship if they find the position suitable, and they will help you to schedule interviews with potential candidates. You may also post advertisements regarding the internship in the school newspaper.

Interview the interns who have shown interest and meet the qualifications you have set. Discuss the position with them and choose the individuals who best suit your business needs.
