To do this you will need to support the roof by using jack posts. Jack posts can also be used to raise the beam if it is not level. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the beam with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement.

    • 2

Measure the height of the concrete block and make a note of the measurement.

    • 3

Divide the measurement in Step 1 by the measurement in Step 2. The result is the number of blocks you will need for the pillar.

    • 4

Set one or more jack posts under the beam. Turn the crank bolt at the top of the jack post by using the adjustable wrench until the top plate is snug to the bottom of the beam.

    • 5

Begin turning the crank bolt to support the beam. Remove the existing posts from under the roof.

    • 6

Place the first concrete block under the beam where you will construct the pillar.

    • 7

Mix a bag or mortar with water in a bucket or a wheelbarrow. Follow the instructions for the mortar to add the correct amount of water.

    • 8

Place a 1-inch think layer of mortar on the surface of the concrete block with the trowel. Set the second concrete block on top in place. Set a level on the top of the concrete block. Use the butt of the trowel to tap on the concrete block until it is level.

    • 9

Continue to lay additional concrete blocks with the mortar and level until you reach the required height.

    • 10

Allow the mortar to cure for two to four days. Loosen the crank bolt on the jack post to lower the beam onto the pillar.
