How to Make a Fabric Sandwich Wrap
Eating a sandwich that you packed can ensure a healthy and affordable meal. Unfortunately, a lot of the supplies that go along with a packed sandwich leave a less-than-desirable wake of trash. Instead of wrapping your daily sandwich in a material that will end up in a landfill or recycling bin, whip up a quick and simple reusable fabric sandwich wrap.
Things You'll Need
- 14-inch square cotton fabric, washed, dried and ironed
- 14-inch square iron-on vinyl
- Clothes iron
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Needle
- Coordinating-color thread
- 2 hook-and-loop fasteners, each 1 1/2 inches long
Instructions

1
Iron one 14-inch vinyl square onto the "wrong side" of one washed, dried and ironed 14-inch square of cotton fabric. The "wrong side" is the side of the fabric without a pattern. Use the vinyl square manufacturer's directions to iron on the vinyl.
-
2
Fold each edge of the vinyl-coated square in 1/2 inch from the edge toward the vinyl side to create a hem.
-
-
3
Iron the hem on all four sides, careful not to iron the exposed vinyl.
-
4
Pin down the hem along all four sides using straight pins.
-
5
Sew the hem using a top-stitch with either a sewing machine or needle and color-coordinated thread, following 3/8 inch from the edge of the wrap all the way around the four sides. Remove the straight pins as you sew. Finish by sewing over the point at which you began sewing.

Lay the wrap so that its vinyl side faces up and is in front of yourself. Place the hook side of one hook-and-loop fastener diagonally in the wrap's upper right corner, leaving about 1/2 inch of space from the corner. Repeat that task in the wrap's lower right corner with the hook side of another hook-and-loop fastener, leaving about 1/2 inch of space from the corner. Pin the fastener pieces to the wrap.
-
7
Flip the wrap over so the right side of the cotton fabric is up. Place the loop end of one hook-and-loop fastener in the upper left corner, leaving about 1/2 inch of space from the corner. Put the loop end of the other hook-and-look fastener in the lower left corner, leaving about 1/2 inch of space from the corner. Pin the fastener pieces to the wrap. Afterward, one piece of hook-and-loop fastener should be in each corner of the wrap, with hook pieces on the vinyl side and loop pieces on the cotton side.
-
8
Sew around each piece of hook-and-loop fastener to secure to the wrap.

Tips & Warnings
To use the wrap, place it vinyl-side up in front of yourself diagonally, forming a diamond shape. Arrange the wrap so one of the hook fasteners is at the top of the diamond. Starting with the left flap, fold each flap of the wrap in toward the sandwich, affixing the hook-and-look fasteners.
To clean the wrap, wipe its vinyl side with a wet cloth. If the cotton portion becomes soiled, then toss the wrap into a washing machine and hang it on a line to dry.
Most fabric stores sell iron-on vinyl.
Vinyl melts very quickly under a clothes iron. Don't let an iron touch exposed vinyl.
