How to Connect to a Senior Person in LinkedIn
LinkedIn is an online business network that allows you to connect to coworkers, as well as business and professional contacts. You can invite any other LinkedIn user to connect to you, including senior people from your own and other organizations. However, usually only those people who know you directly -- or at least know of you -- will accept the invitation. This might include current and former bosses or senior managers in the organizations with which you do business. Once the other user accepts your connection invitation, you appear in each other's connections list and have access to each other's contact details.
Instructions
-
-
1
Sign in to your LinkedIn account.
-
2
Type the name of the senior person to whom you want to connect into the "Search" input field. Select "People" from the search type options drop-down list beside the "Search" field. Click the blue magnifying glass icon to launch the search.
-
-
3
View the search results in the main window. LinkedIn displays the name of each user, along with his job title and profile image. If you see a blue button with "1st," "2nd" or "3rd" beside the user's name, it means he is already connected to you or one of your contacts, and is therefore part of your direct or extended network.
-
4
Click the user's name to highlight the name. This displays a selection of options to the right of the user's name, including the "Add to Network" option. Click the "Add to Network Link." This opens the "Invite to Connect" page.
-
5
Select the radio button beside the relevant relationship option in the "How Do You Know (Username)?" section. You can mark the contact as a coworker, classmate, friend or business contact.
-
6
Type a greeting or message to the senior person in the "Include a Personal Note" input field. This is an optional step, and you can use the default LinkedIn greeting if you prefer. If you don't know the senior person well, you might want to use this note to give brief details about yourself and explain why you want to add her to your LinkedIn network. Keep the note concise, polite and formal -- for example, close the note with a "Sincerely" or "Regards" and your full name.
-
7
Click the blue "Send Invitation" button. LinkedIn notifies you by email when the other user accepts your invitation.
