How to Knot Pearl Beads

How to Knot Pearl Beads thumbnail
Use a tray or towel to hold pearls during stringing.

Knotting between pearls serves two main purposes. First, it prevents the pearls from scattering if the string breaks. Second, it prevents the pearls from rubbing against each other, which wears the finish. Knots are either tied by hand or with a knotting tool, but both require large amounts of string. Allow at a minimum of three times the length of the finished piece when you measure thread. Knotting close to the pearl creates a more professional appearance.

Instructions

  1. Knotting by Hand

    • 1

Thread the string onto a beading needle and insert one end of the clasp.

    • 2

Tie a knot and thread the first pearl.

    • 3

Create a basic knot by threading the string through a loop around your fingers. You can use a needle to guide the knot close to the pearl.

    • 4

Thread the pearls, knotting between each.

    • 5

Add the other end of the clasp and knot. Seal the knot.

    Using a Knotting Tool

    • 6

Thread the string onto a beading needle and insert one end of the clasp.

    • 7

Tie a knot and thread the first pearl.

    • 8

Form a knot by creating a loop over two fingers and letting the thread fall into the loop.

    • 9

Push the awl through the loop and pull the thread away while pushing the awl towards the pearls.

    • 10

Add pearls and knots to the desired length, add the other end of the clasp and knot. Seal the thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seal silk thread with superglue and synthetic thread with a flame.

  • Wash your hands to prevent discoloring the thread. Keeping the flame near the thread for too long will destroy the thread.
