How to Make a Canopic Jar

Canopic jars were used in ancient Egypt during the mummification process. Important organs were sealed in the canopic jars and then entombed with the sarcophagus. Canopic jars were topped by the heads of four different gods. If your child is doing a unit on ancient Egypt or Egyptian mythology, have him make his own canopic jar.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse out a round ice cream container and its lid thoroughly.

    • 2

Spread out newspaper on a flat working surface.

    • 3

Lay the lid right-side up on your working surface.

    • 4

Mold a head directly to the lid using air-dry clay. A falcon head represents the god Qebehsenuef, while a jackal head represents Duamutef. A baboon head represents Hapy, while a human male head represents Imsety.

    • 5

Allow the clay to harden over the next 24 hours.

    • 6

Paint the lid and the container of the canopic jar with acrylic paint, using several layers to create a smooth even appearance.

    • 7

Allow the paint to dry completely.
