How to Remove Mildew Odor on Canvas With Peroxide & Vinegar
Mildew odor on a canvas surface, such as patio furniture or a camping tent, indicates that mildew spores are present. The musty basement odor is certainly less than pleasant. Removal of the odor requires you to get rid of the mildew spores, as well. Peroxide and vinegar are two household products that remedy a mildew odor on canvas. Both successfully kill mildew and help remove the accompanying odor without the use of chemical-laden cleaners. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Hose
- Bucket
- 2 cups hydrogen peroxide
- Scrub brush
- White vinegar
- Sponge
- Clean cloths

Hose down the canvas to moisten the surface so mildew spores don't become airborne and transfer to nearby surfaces.

Pour 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide into a bucket. Dip a scrub brush into the peroxide and allow the excess moisture to drip back into the bucket.

Scrub the canvas surface to kill mildew and mold spores. Rinse the scrub brush, as needed, apply more peroxide and continue to scrub.

Rinse loosened mildew off the canvas with the hose.

Wet a sponge with white vinegar. Wipe off the canvas surface to remove any remaining mildew stains and deodorize mildew smell. Dry the surface by wiping it off with clean cloths then allow the canvas to air dry the rest of the way.

Tips & Warnings
Move canvas furniture to a sheltered location during rainy weather. Roll up awnings to prevent them from getting wet.
If you must tear down camp while your tent is wet, be sure to set it up again once you return home so the canvas can dry out.
Mild dishwashing detergent mixed with water can also be used to remove mildew stains and odors from canvas.
Avoid using bleach solutions to remove mildew smell and stains from canvas as bleach can weaken canvas material.
