How to Live Alone in the City

Living alone can be stressful and lonely, but peaceful, private and blissful at the same time. Making the best of living alone can include hosting fabulous parties at your city abode, as well as taking certain safety precautions. The key is to be aware of your surroundings, make trustworthy friends and enjoy your single status. Keep everything in mind---the good and the bad---while you're adapting to your new surroundings.

Instructions

Cultivate strict safety practices. Be aware of entry points and alternative access areas near your home where strangers may be lurking. Look around when you're checking your mail, getting into elevators or have your hands full. Lock your doors at all times, even when you think your surroundings are safe and neighbors are friendly. Never allow anyone to enter your home that you don't know, including restaurant deliverymen or mail carriers.

Seek out fun activities. Venture out and explore areas in the city that are new to you. Find a late-night grocery store, early opening bookstore and favorite coffee shop or cupcakery where you can visit when you have nothing to do. Join e-mail lists for area museums and groups that are within your interests, such as young professionals networking leagues or book clubs. Add events to your personal calendar so you're taking advantage of the many activities that exist in a city.

Build a local network. Make new friends not only as partners to hang out with but also people you can depend on in case you are sick, need a ride to the airport or have any other emergency. Meet people who share similar interests so you can explore the city with someone else. Agree to meet someone out for coffee or at a festival so that not every activity you partake in is solo.

Make your space a home sweet home. Create a welcoming space, so that you not only feel safe when you come home, but also cozy. Splurge on a few items that you must have to feel comfortable, such as a television, Internet access or a balcony. Make decorating your place an activity where you can take your time making every aspect, from the kitchen to the living room, a place you feel happy to be in and confident to invite friends to see.
