Tie friendship bracelets out of strands of embroidery floss.

When tying friendship bracelets, you need to know how to make a backward knot. Friendship bracelets derive their patterns from the order of the strings and the direction in which you tie the knots. Backward knots are essential for tying patterns that form arrows, chevrons or diagonal lines. The direction in which you tie your knots determines the angle of the lines. Knowing how to tie backward knots opens up more friendship bracelet pattern options.

Instructions

    • 1

Work to the point in the bracelet at which you want to tie a backward knot.

    • 2

Hold the working embroidery string in your right hand. Pull the string to its right behind it, and hold that string in your left hand. Pull on the string in your left hand, and hold it taut.

    • 3

Lay the working string over the left string from right to left, making a loop.

    • 4

Thread the working string through the loop, and pull it tight.

    • 5

Make another loop in the same fashion to create two loops around the left string; the working string should now be on the left side.

    • 6

Pull both strands to tighten the knots.
