How to Make a Square Knot for Hair Bows

Tie a square knot with ribbon that matches the bow ribbon.

A square knot is a knot used as the center knot of boutique style hair bows. The purpose of the knot is to both decorate the bow, giving it a more professional look, and to cover the center of the bow tied with wire or sewn. Tying a square knot with a flat piece of ribbon takes practice. It is easier to cut a longer piece of ribbon to tie the knot, and trim the tails to fit afterwards.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one piece of ribbon four to 6 inches long.

    • 2

Melt the ends of the cut ribbon with the lighter to prevent fraying.

    • 3

Fold the ribbon in half, holding the fold in your left hand and the two ends in your right hand.

    • 4

Insert the pointer finger of your left hand into the fold to make a loop.

    • 5

Bring the top piece of ribbon under the bottom piece and push the end of the ribbon through the loop.

    • 6

Arrange the knot by pushing it towards the center of the ribbon and gently pull the ends.

    • 7

Make the knot smaller by pulling the ends tighter. Make a larger knot by pulling the ends gently.
