How to Make a 3D Barney Cake

Decorating a flat sheet cake can be fun, but sometimes it's a little more exciting to offer something different. By using a three-dimensional cake pan, you can bake a pop-out design into the actual cake itself, before any frosting is even applied. Barney the dinosaur is a popular children's television entertainment character with bright purple skin and a green belly. If you wish to create a three-dimensional Barney cake, you will need to find a three-dimensional cake pan. These cake pans are commonly sold in craft stores and online and are very user friendly for even beginner bakers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Rub a cold stick of butter all over the inside of a three-dimensional Barney cake pan. The butter should leave a thin, even layer without any clumps.

    • 2

Pour 1/4 cup of flour into the buttered cake pan and use your hands to tap it around to stick to the butter. When the entire pan has been floured, discard excess flour in the sink.

    • 3

Pour the cake batter of choice into the pan until it is up to the fill line on the pan, or two-thirds of the way full.

    • 4

Bake the cake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until you can poke a toothpick through the center and it comes out clean.

    • 5

Allow the cake to cool completely before flipping the pan over on to a platter. Lift directly up to remove the pan.

    • 6

Brush off any excess flour clumps gently with your fingers. Ice the entire cake using purple frosting.

    • 7

Sprinkle some cornstarch on a counter or table and use a rolling pin to flatten some rolled, green fondant to be 1/8-inch thick.

    • 8

Use a fondant cutter to create the belly shape, looking at the specific cake mold to get a size estimate. The belly piece should be shaped like a big raindrop with a flat tip instead of a pointed one.

    • 9

Lay the green fondant shape over the purple icing on the belly of the dinosaur.

    • 10

Draw a filled-in, crescent shape for a mouth using white decorating icing. Also create two white circles for eyes, and add a dot of black decorating icing in the center of each eye.

    • 11

Use yellow decorating icing to color in the tips of Barney's toes.
