You can learn how to correctly fold a Buddhist robe.

The folding of a Buddhist monk robe is an important factor in wearing the garment correctly. The order of a monk decides on the color of the underwear worn under the robe. Sometimes it is the same color, but other times an order of a monk may not wear undergarments at all. In this case, an incorrectly folded robe causes problems with both symbolism and potentially leaving the monk exposed. Folding the robe correctly prevents this from happening. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the two Uttarasanga robes. These are the longest, usually measuring around six feet wide by nine feet long. Fold the robes five times in a fan-fold pattern by the longest dimension.

    • 2

Move to the Sanghati. This is the extra robe that is worn for warmth. Fold this robe in the same fan-fold pattern used in folding the Uttarasanga.

    • 3

Fold the Uttarasanga in half. When folded, the front of the robe should be two-thirds longer than the back of the robe. Wrap the front of the robe around the front of the torso. Leave the folds on the left side of the body.

    • 4

Tuck the unfolded part of the robe under the folded part to secure the robe on the body. Leave the excess folds to hang in front of the torso.

    • 5

Drape the Sanghati over the left shoulder. Secure the robes in place with a belt.
