How to Calculate Your GPA for a Car Insurance Discount

Your grade point average, or GPA, is a measure of how well you're doing in your classes. It's usually based on a scale from 0 to 4.0, though some schools add additional points for honors and advanced placement courses. Many car insurers offer discounts to students with a 3.0 grade point average. Some specify that students need a B average or will accept students who can prove they're in the top 20 percent of their class. Good student discounts are significant, ranging from 10 percent to 25 percent.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the number of credit hours you've earned for one grade. For example, if you took five classes, you could have earned a B in three of them and an A in two. If the total credit hours of those three courses equals nine credit hours, then you have nine credit hours of B credits. If the total credit hours of the A courses is seven, then you have seven credit hours of A credits. You have a total of 16 credit hours.

    • 2

Multiply the credit hours of the course times the numerical equivalent of the grade you received. In most cases, an A is a 4.0, a B is a 3.0, a C is a 2.0, a D is a 1.0 and F is 0. Therefore, if you took nine credits with a B average, the total is 27. If you took seven credits with an A average, the total is 28.

    • 3

Add all of the totals together. For example, 27 plus 28 is 55.

    • 4

Divide your total by the total number of hours. In the example, you had 16 credit hours total. Divide 55 by 16 to find a total GPA of 3.44.
