How to Crochet a Turtleneck

Turtlenecks are popular during winter for their added warmth.

Although crocheting anything is a difficult task that requires skill, adding a high neck to a sweater, commonly known as a turtleneck, requires a certain amount of technique. To create a rib-knit turtleneck sweater with a crochet hook, you should already be familiar with various types of stitches, such as the chain stitch and the slip stitch, that are combined to make the neck of a turtleneck. The resulting warmth and comfort will make a difference on a cold winter day.

Using the same hook that you used to crochet the body of your sweater, connect the yarn with a slip stitch in one shoulder seam to begin the collar of your turtleneck. Chain one and single crochet even stitches around the neck opening. Use a slip stitch again to join the first single crochet. This first round of single crochet stitches will form the base from which you will build upward. At this point, switch to the next-smaller size hook than was used for the body of the sweater and chain 41.

With the smaller crochet hook, single crochet in the second chain and then single crochet in each chain stitch across. This should make 40 single crochet stitches. At that point, slip stitch in the next free single crochet stitch on the neck edge, and turn. You will have created your first row of your turtleneck collar.

Turning around and working across the single crochet stitches you just made, single crochet in the back loop of each single crochet and then turn. Again, you've made 40 single crochet stitches. Chain one and then single crochet in the back look of each single crochet stitch across. Then repeat Step 2 around the neck edge.

Fasten off your yarn, but leave enough for a sewing length. The length should be enough to join the two edges of the collar that you have made. Using a yarn or tapestry needle and the length you have left on the edge, sew the last row of the rib to the first row. Fold down the top edge of the rib toward the right side of the sweater. This is the final touch for your turtleneck collar.
