How to Stage a Parade

Some parades draw huge crowds with large floats.

Organizing a parade can seem like an overwhelming task. However, parades fit nicely with celebratory events, such as the Fourth of July. Whether the parade is large or small, it is always nice to share the day with like-minded people. Small towns can have simple parades with people dressed in red, white and blue, while larger areas can hold big parades with showstoppers like floats, clowns and large bands. Design a parade that will appeal to the people in your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local municipal office to find out what permits are needed to hold a parade. This will vary by community. In some communities permits are given by the police department. Obtain the necessary permits.

    • 2

Plan your parade route. Choose a circular route if possible so that participants can easily return to the starting point. Select a route that is not so long that children get tired from walking but is also not too short. The parade should last one to two hours. Figure out when the parade will start and finish. Don't choose a time of day that is too hot or the participants and observers won't enjoy it. Arrange for the police department to block traffic on the route during the parade.

    • 3

Advertise for parade participants. Use online media, flyers and classified ads to reach people. Contact organizations, such as Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, to have them participate. Decide who will lead the parade. A school marching band, fire truck and local politicians are examples of parade leaders. The Chamber of Commerce can help get local businesses to participate.

Look for interesting additions to the parade such as 4-H club members who can ride their horses or vintage car club members who can drive along in their classic cars.

    • 5

Organize special activities for the parade such as drawings, raffles and kids activities. Some groups toss candy to children in the audience. You can also have a vote for the best parade participant.

    • 6

Arrange the parade's order for the best visual effect. Don't allow similar groups to be grouped too close together. Make sure everyone has enough space and that the order will keep the crowd interested.

    • 7

Advertise for the parade so you will have a big crowd. Take advantage of the radio, newspapers, flyers and online classifieds.
