How to Play a Sound on a Windows Computer

You need a sound card and speakers, and Media Player or a Sound Editor to play sounds on your computer.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sound Cards
  • SoundEdit 16
  • Sound Recording And Editing Software
  1. Step 1

    Locate the file that you want to play.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click on the file to open it in the Media Player configured as the default.

  3. Step 3

    Click Play and listen.

  4. Step 4

    Go to the File menu and select Open to open and play a new file.

  5. Step 5

    Locate the file that you want to play and open it.

  6. Step 6

    Click Play.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sound files usually end in extensions such as .wav, .snd, or .au.
  • The Windows Media Player should be included with your Windows software; if you can't find it or don't have it, you can download it from Microsoft.
  • You can use sound files to change your computer's warning beep, or you can play a sound as your computer starts up.
