How to Enable the Call Phone Option in Gmail

Gmail users in the United States can make phone calls from their Gmail account to any landline or cellphone in the United States or Canada for free, and can also make international calls at a fixed rate. In order to use this Gmail feature, download and install the Google video and voice plugin on your computer.

      Navigate to google.com/chat/voice and click "Install Voice and Video Chat" to install the voice and video plugin.

      Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the plugin.

      Sign in to your Gmail account and click "Call Phone" under the "Chat" heading on the left side of the screen. A window labeled "Call" appears on the screen with a phone keypad.

      Enter the phone number of the person you want to call by clicking the phone keypad, then click "Call."

Tips & Warnings

  • You need a computer with a built-in microphone; otherwise, purchase a separate microphone to make calls through Gmail.
