Make your own non-elasticated bubble skirt

A bubble skirt traditionally sits above the knee, poofs out at the bottom and tapers down from a drawn in waist. The waist is often elasticated, but you can also create a draw string bubble skirt that will accommodate a wider range of sizes. Use bright and colorful fabrics to make you bubble skirt really eye-catching.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the waist of the person you are making the skirt for and determine how long you wish the material to hang from the waist. Measure the hips to determine the length of the fabric: add about 25 percent extra onto the length and width (length of the skirt from the waist) and cut to size. Cut the string to length at double the width measurement of your waist so that it will hang down the front of the skirt when it is drawn.

    • 2

Lay the string all the way along the length of the underside of the fabric just below the top. Fold the fabric over to cover the string and sew a line along the bottom, encasing the drawstring in the fabric. This is now the back of the skirt; turn over to the front.

    • 3

Fold the material in half with the underside of the fabric on the outside and join at the two seams with a double rows of stitches on the sewing machine. Fold the bottom of the skirt up about half and inch and sew a hem along the bottom of the skirt still on the underside of the fabric. Turn the fabric back to the front and sit the joining seam on the left or right side.

    • 4

Make two slits an inch apart in the top drawstring section of the skirt. Cut using scissors through the drawstring and pull both ends out until the string inside the hem starts to bunch up.

    • 5

Tie the top of the strings in a loose knot (the drawstring will always be adjustable) and tie the ends in a tight knot to stop fraying. Finish the slits off neatly with a needle and thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add beads to the ends of your drawstring or unravel the string and braid it to add detail and interest to your skirt tie.
