How to Improve My Dance Spinning Technique
Most dance styles, from salsa to tango, include spinning movements. Though the exact technique for a spin varies depending on the dance style, all dance spins require abdominal strength, proper posture and careful focus. Because spins force you to turn your head, they sometimes lead to dizziness, disorientation or other negative side effects. Check with your doctor before you begin a regime of spinning technique or other aggressive dance techniques.

1
Strengthen your abdominal muscles. The greater your abdominal strength, the greater your control over your posture and center of weight. Perform strengthening moves such as crunches, planks and leg raises every other day for five to ten minutes.
-
2
Stand up straight, with a firm, upright back and your chin parallel to the floor. Soften your knees and point your toes outward slightly at an angle between 45 and 60 degrees. This position prepares you for a spin.
-
-
3
Assume the first position of the spin. The initial position varies, depending on the specific spin. For example, to assume the first position of the salsa spin, raise your heels and pull your abdominal muscles inward. Bend your arms at the elbows, creating a 90-degree angle. Raise your arms until your upper arms and your shoulders create a straight line.
-
4
Practice raising from your start position to the first position of the spin several times. Each time you adjust positions, check your posture in the mirror and adjust it as necessary.
-
5
Perform the steps before the spin. Take a step forward, using your right foot. Tap your left foot and step your right foot backward. Tap your left foot again. Step your right foot forward. The right leg crosses the left leg. Push into the spin. The right foot plants on the left side of the left foot.
-
6
Shift your weight onto your left foot. Push your left foot in a counter-clockwise direction.
-
7
As you spin, fix your gaze on a specific location directly in front of you. When your shoulders are parallel to the gaze location, turn your head. Return your gaze to the specific location. This technique, known as spotting, helps decrease dizziness.
-
8
Practice the spin several times. If you become dizzy, take a break and practice an alternate technique.
