How to Lock Out Skype

You can prevent people who are using your computer from using programs like Skype by creating a new rule in Windows Firewall. As the computer's administrator, you can decide which programs are allowed to communicate with the Internet. When you create a new rule in the firewall and then someone starts Skype, they will receive an error message letting them know the program was unable to connect. This procedure effectively locks the Skype client out of the company's servers.

Tips & Warnings

  • On the "When does this apply" page of the wizard, you can specify whether or not to block the condition under all network conditions. For example, to block Skype when you are on a public network only, simply deselect the other two options. All three network environments are set to be blocked by default, so if you do not need to customize anything, you can just skip this.
