1
Set up an ironing board in a safe place. Plug in your clothes iron and set it in an upright position on top of the ironing board. The metal bottom should not be face down at this time. Make sure the hot iron is out of reach of children.
-
2
Choose the correct setting for your clothes iron. The temperature setting will depend on what kind of fabric is curling. Most irons will tell you which setting to use for which fabric. Nylon, silk, satin and other delicate fabrics require a cool setting. Polyester, rayon and wool should be ironed at medium heat. High settings should be used for sturdy cottons, denim, corduroy and jersey knits. Press linen at the hottest setting possible.

3
Pour a small amount of water into the iron if you want to use steam to press the curl out of the fabric. The iron will be supplied with a small hole for the water. When you tip the iron towards the fabric, it will produce steam.
-
4
Wait while the iron reaches the correct temperature for your fabric. Spread the curled fabric flat against the board in preparation for ironing.
-
5
Press the hot iron down on the curled part of the fabric. Do not leave the iron in one place for long, especially if you are using a high setting. Continually move the iron back and forth across the curled area, applying a small amount of pressure. If the fabric is delicate, you may want to place a press cloth, such as a cotton handkerchief, between the iron and the fabric.

6
Unplug the iron. Allow it to cool in a safe place.
