A basic lighter is all you need to keep your ribbon from fraying.

Use ribbon to decorate crafts, homemade clothing or accessories and packaged gifts. Ribbons complement a wide range of styles, from elegant to fun and creative. No matter how you decide to use ribbon, start by applying heat to the edge to create a seal; this will keep your ribbon from fraying at the edge and ruining your creation.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise and snip a piece off at an angle. This will result in a V-shaped end, which frays less easily and is more decorative.

    • 2

Start a flame with either a match or lighter. Use a candle to make the flame last longer and give you time to work.

    • 3

Hold the folded ribbon over the open flame for a few seconds, then flip it over and seal the other side.

    • 4

Allow the ribbon to dry for a few minutes before using it.

Tips & Warnings

  • This method works only with plastic-based ribbon that can melt slightly. Fabric-based ribbon won't seal and may be a fire hazard.
