For many parents of infants and toddlers, shirts are more convenient than onesies. If the child is potty training, it may be easier for him to remove shorts without having to unsnap buttons. It is also easier for parents to change diapers if the child is wearing a shirt. Many babies quickly outgrow onesies. However, it is easy to recycle a too-tight onesie by turning it into a shirt. Even if it still fits, you may want to convert it to a T-shirt for the sake of convenience.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the onesie on a table or flat surface. Spread the wrinkles out with your hand. Hold a ruler horizontally at the highest point of the leg openings. Mark the line made by the ruler with the pencil. Turn the onesie over on the opposite side and repeat the line.

    • 2

Cut off the bottom of the onesie with a pair of fabric shears. Turn the onesie (now a shirt) inside-out. Curl the bottom of the shirt up about 1/2 inch to create a narrow hem. Pin the hem all the way around the shirt to hold evenly in place while you sew.

    • 3

Sew the hem. Use thread that matches the color of the onesie. Turn the shirt right-side out. Decorate or embellish the onesie, if desired. For instance, iron on a T-shirt transfer. Alternatively, sew a felt animal on the chest or stitch a fabric letter for the first letter of the child's name. Avoid sewing buttons or other small objects onto the top; these objects pose a choking hazard if removed during play.
