DIY Liquid Silicone

Liquid silicone not only secures objects in place but seals gaps or cracks around doors and windows. Many different types of silicone exist; some are used for indoor applications, while others are used on the exterior of a home. When using liquid silicone, follow a few basic steps that to ensure you are applying it correctly to the various surfaces.

Things You'll Need

• Caulk gun
• Utility knife

Instructions

1. Slide a tube of silicone sealant into a caulk gun. Read the label on the sealant to determine the type you need to use. If you plan to use it inside use an interior silicone and are using it outside, use a waterproof sealant.

2. Press the silicone sealant firmly into the caulk gun, and cut off the tip along the nozzle of the silicone sealant with a utility knife. Position the knife near the top of the nozzle, and cut upward at a 45-degree angle.

3. Line up the silicone sealant where you plan to seal the gap or crack. Push the nozzle up firmly against the opening with the open side facing down against the gap.

4. Press the trigger, and begin releasing the sealant along the gap. Move across the gap, releasing an 1/8-inch-thick bead over the entire surface. Continue all the way around the area until the silicone sealant covers the entire gap.

5. Wait one hour for the sealant to dry, and inspect it to eliminate the possibility of spaces or holes in the sealant. Check to ensure the sealant has covered the entire gap, and repeat the process for any other gaps you need to fill.
