How to Make a Walk Cycle in Blender

Blender 3D is a software used for modeling, animation and rendering. In most 3D applications, animating a 3D model is a difficult task, especially if you are trying to make the rigged figure walk in a realistic way. It often requires a great deal of tinkering on the part of the animator. However, in Blender the process is quick.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Blender application. Select "File" from the menu and open a rigged figure with which you want to work.

    • 2

Go to the first frame in the timeline and pose the model as you want it in the first frame using the posing handles.

    • 3

Click on "Insert KeyFrames" to add keyframes for the bones of your armature.

    • 4

Click the "Copy Pose" button to save the positions of the bones.

    • 5

Click on a frame further down the timeline. Click "Paste Flip Pose." The figure is now (in this frame) standing in the opposite position. If the left leg was stepping forward before, now it is the right leg.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3-5 from the current frame. Select a frame between the first two keyframes and adjust the feet so they seem to be hitting the ground realistically.

    • 7

Insert another KeyFrame and copy the pose. Paste this pose (flipped) between the last two keyframes. Click "Play" to watch him walk the walk. Save your work.
