Flash Lightning bleach kits are designed to lift your natural hair color several shades lighter before application of a new, lighter hair color. If your hair is a shade of brown and you want to change to a light natural or ash blonde, it will generally not lighten as much as the photo on the package front. Most packaged hair colors use a 20-volume peroxide that will only lift one to two levels of color lightness. Flash Lightning kits use a 40-volume peroxide to lift two to four levels of lightness before adding the colorant for a brighter finished product.

Strand Testing

Put the gloves from the hair lightening kit on your hands. Cut open the bleach powder bag with scissors. Measure 1/2 teaspoon of the powder with a measuring spoon and place it in the enclosed tub. Pour just enough of the liquid developer into the powder to make a thick cream about the consistency of mayonnaise. Mix the lightener thoroughly with the enclosed brush.

Brush through your hair to remove all tangles. Pull one strand of hair from behind your ear forward. Place a forefinger and thumb into the lightener and apply it heavily on the strand of hair. Observe the current time on a clock or watch. Wait for the product to process about 10 to 15 minutes.

Dampen a paper towel with water. Wipe the lightener off the strand of hair and observe the results. If there is an orange or yellow tint to the hair strand, reapply the lightener and keep observing the test strand every 10 to 15 minutes until it is the desired lightness. Light to dark blonde should take about 20 to 60 minutes, light brown hair should take 20 to 90 minutes, medium brown hair should take about 40 to 90 minutes and dark brown hair will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to lighten.

Remove the lightener from the test strand of hair with a wet paper towel.

Hair Lightening

Place a towel around your shoulders to protect your clothing from drips. Pour the remaining powder bleach into the tub and most of the remaining liquid developer. Mix the lightener with the brush from the kit until it is consistent. Add small amount of the remaining developer if needed to thin the lightener to a mayonnaise consistency.

Dip your gloves hand into the lightener and apply a thick coating to all of your hair. Check the progress of the lightener at the same time the test strip was done.

Wet your hair in the shower and work the lightener into a soapy foam as you do with shampoo. Rinse hair thoroughly with ample warm water until the water runs clear. Towel dry your hair and add any other usual products. Style your hair as you normally do.
