How to Wire a P-90 Guitar Pickup

The original P-90 pickup was designed by Gibson and was one of their few single-coil pickups, since the company used humbucking pickups on many of their guitar models. The pickup had a more fat and aggressive sound than most single-coil pickups, and tended to have more volume output as well. The pickups are generally used in pairs. Wiring the P-90 guitar pickups is not particularly difficult, but you will need some soldering experience or an assistant who can do the soldering for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the safety glasses and plug in the soldering iron. Place it in a sturdy stand and allow it to heat up for several minutes.

    • 2

Heat up the soldering point of the wire coming from the original pickup until the wire releases. Remove the pickup. Repeat for the second pickup.

    • 3

Connect the wire from the top (neck) pickup to the bottom pin on the back of the top volume knob unit. Solder it in place by heating up the contact point with the soldering iron and adding some solder while it is heated.

    • 4

Connect the wire from the bottom (bridge) pickup to the middle pin of the bottom volume knob unit and solder it in place by heating up the contact point with the soldering iron and adding some solder while it is heated.

    • 5

Check all connections by gently pulling on the wires to ensure that they don't come loose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never leave a hot soldering iron unattended, as it could start a fire or cause an injury.

  • Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling too many hazardous fumes when soldering.
