Change this key into a bump key and open any lock of the same brand.

Making a bump key with a file will result in a key opening tool that can quickly and easily open the lock the key is cut for. Bump keys are modified from key blanks to open a specific lock. Regardless of the complexity of the teeth that are cut into a key, a bump key can open a lock by temporarily knocking the lock's tumblers into position while the bump key is turned and the lock is opened. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of tumblers in your lock. This can be done by slowly inserting the key into the lock and counting the clicks of the tumblers falling into place while the key is inserted, by counting the number of divisions cut into the key or by checking with the manufacturer of the lock.

    • 2

File down the seat of each tumbler into the key down to Position 9, or to where the contours are cut lengthwise into the key. Do this for each position except for the first, which should be left as high as possible.

    • 3

File down the tip and the shoulder of the key very slightly, not more than half a millimeter, to allow the key to be inserted into the lock only slightly further than a regular key.

    • 4

Insert the key into your lock, then back it out 1/8 inch. Apply slightly turning force on the key as if you were to open the lock, then tap the back of the key into the lock with the handle of your file or a small hammer and open the lock.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is illegal to open locks you do not have permission to open; do not attempt this process on any locks other than the ones you own.
